Visy Rail OCR Portal

Automated imaging and data capture for every wagon and container passing through your terminal.

Solutions and products Smart Rail Visy Rail OCR Portal
Every wagon and container automatically imaged, recognized, and reported – as the train moves through.

Visy Train OCR Portal automates the monitoring and data collection of rail cargo traffic. As trains pass through the portal at operational speed, the system captures high-quality images of all wagon and container sides and extracts key information in real time – wagon IDs, container IDs, dangerous goods labels, cargo types, brake positions, and more.

All captured data and images are accessible in Visy Train Gate and shared automatically with the TOS, giving operators a complete and accurate overview of every train visit without manual input. Inspection and reporting tasks that previously required personnel at the trackside can be handled from the office improving both safety and efficiency.

Each Visy Train OCR Portal system is configured to match the customer’s specific operations and recognition requirements, with Visy specialists selecting the right hardware, lens configuration, and OCR features for every site.

Features

Linescan imaging for cargo
Line scan cameras capture high-quality images of all container and cargo sides as trains pass through the portal – recognizing container IDs, ISO codes, dangerous goods labels, door direction, and seal presence. Images are captured automatically at train speed, with no stopping required.

Linescan imaging for wagons
Dedicated line scan cameras image wagon sides to capture wagon IDs and other markings.

Roof imaging
Cameras mounted on the portal capture images of container and wagon roofs as trains pass through. Roof imaging enables recognition of tank cover positions and supports damage inspection on the top surface of containers – extending visibility to third side of the cargo.
Depending on whether the train is petrol-powered or electric, the train portal setup differs. As a result, the configuration may include a top frame with a line-scan camera.

Laser scanners for speed measurement and event triggering
Laser scanners detect approaching trains and measure speed in real time – triggering imaging events at precisely the right moment to ensure optimal image quality at any speed up to 70 km/h. The bi-directional setup ensures accurate triggering and consistent performance regardless of the direction of travel.

Every deployment is configured to fit your operations.

Hardware & System
The portal frame is equipped with line scan and area cameras, laser scanners, illuminators, and electrical cabinets – all system design by Visy using robust, off-the-shelf components. Depending on the site layout and requirements, the setup can also include an upper frame to capture roof images of wagons and containers passing through. Visy specialists select the correct hardware and lens configuration based on the site layout and operational requirements. The system supports bi-directional operation with a small footprint and operates reliably in harsh weather conditions from -40°C to +50°C.
Software & Applications
Visy’s OCR software processes captured images and validates recognition results to achieve accuracy rates of 97–100%. Recognized data is made available in real time through Visy Train Gate management application for reviewing traffic events, handling exceptions, and managing captured data. See Visy Train Gate for more information on the user application.

Integrations
Captured data and images are exchanged in real time with the Terminal Operating System. The system also supports integration with customs inspection and X-ray systems, ensuring all relevant parties receive train traffic data automatically. Integration options are configured based on the customer’s existing system network and operational requirements.
Configurations & Options
Recognition features are configured to match each customer’s operations – including wagon ID, wagon length, container ID and length, cargo type, dangerous goods labels, brake position, and chemical tank cover detection. The system is suitable for container terminals and intermodal facilities, logistics and manufacturing sites, and customs and law enforcement checkpoints.

With automated data capture, rail cargo terminals gain a smarter, safer, and more efficient way to handle train traffic.
