A gate that opens and closes is just the beginning. Visy Smart Gate consists of a fully integrated access management ecosystem with recognition features that control who enters, what they are carrying, where they can go, and what happens with that information – automatically and in real time.

Different visitor and vehicle types carry different access rights. Smart Gate manages multiple permit groups simultaneously – contractors, regular suppliers, one-time visitors, staff – each with their own rules, time windows, and access points. Web-based permit applications allow access requests to be submitted and approved by multiple hosts across the organization, removing the bottleneck of a single point of control and giving coordinators a clear overview of who is on site and why.

Beyond license plate recognition, the Smart Gate ecosystem is equipped with AI-powered OCR to identify container codes, tank and trailer markings, and dangerous goods labels. OCR captures data and passes it to logistics, ERP, warehouse, and other third-party systems for further processing. As a result, every gate transaction is fully automated and recorded, giving the operation both the throughput efficiency and the audit trail it needs.

Gate control
Real-time gate monitoring with automated barriers, traffic lights, and area guidance. Operators see every event as it happens and can manage access across all checkpoints from a single interface.
Access permit management
Permits are managed through configurable permit groups that define the rules, permissions, and key settings for each permit. Operators can manage the permit information, and add or create new identifiers for the permit such as RFID card and license plate number. Where systems such as safety training are integrated with the Visy Access Gate, the data they hold can affect whether the permit holder is granted access to the premises.
Area monitoring
Real-time area monitoring gives operators an up-to-date view of people and vehicles inside the area. Live area lists support filtering and reporting, and help highlight exceptions such as ghost entries or exceeded visit times.
Exception handling
Events can be accessed and edited as needed. A clear denial reason is shown to the user, and the operator can often resolve the situation by correcting permit-related data, linking missing pre-recognition information and re-checking the event. If needed, authorized users can also manually acknowledge the event or open the gate, usually with a comment for traceability.
Reporting
Visy Access Gate provides a wide range of ready-made traffic reporting tools, including hourly, daily, and monthly reports for individual access points.

In addition, the system supports fully customized customer-specific reporting. Reports can be automatically scheduled and delivered via email or exported as raw data directly into the customer’s own reporting or business intelligence systems.

This applies across container terminals as well as ro-ro and ferry operations, which face the same core challenge of identifying and processing vehicles efficiently at the gate.

What happens when a read doesn’t match or a check fails?
No system resolves every case automatically – an unexpected mismatch may need a manual check, with the exception flagged in GOS user application for an operator to review.
