Container Handling

The future-proof partner for all smart gate, access control, and terminal automation needs.

Solutions and products Container Handling

Vision technology based OCR systems that automate container recognition, verify every move, and keep your terminal’s data accurate – across every crane type and piece of equipment.

Visy’s container handling OCR systems bring automated recognition and real-time data exchange to every part of terminal operations – from ship-to-shore cranes on the quay to RTG and RMG cranes in the yard, and all the way down to individual pieces of container handling equipment.

At the core of every system is the same principle: automatically capture the container ID at the point of lift, validate it, and share it with the systems that depend on it. When OCR, PDS, and TOS work together seamlessly, terminals gain a live, accurate picture of where every container is – and every move that has been made.

Visy designs every system based on the specific crane type, equipment, and operational requirements of the customer. Whether a new installation or a retrofit, every deployment is configured to deliver the right combination of recognition features, hardware, and integrations for the job.

SYSTEMS

Visy STS OCR

Visy STS Crane OCR automatically images all container sides and recognizes container IDs, ISO codes, dangerous goods labels (IMDG/ADR), seal presence, and door direction while containers are being handled by ship-to-shore cranes.

SYSTEMS

Visy TopView for Crane Spreaders

Visy TopView is a spreader-mounted OCR camera system that automatically reads container IDs from the roof during each lift.

SYSTEMS

Visy TopView for Reach Stackers & Top Loaders

Visy TopView is a spreader-mounted OCR camera system for reach stackers and top loaders that automatically reads container IDs the moment your equipment locks onto a box.

SYSTEMS

Visy RTG OCR

The core value of Visy RTG OCR is straightforward: automatically capture the container ID on every lift and share it with the Position Detection System (PDS). The PDS confirms where the container lands, and the TOS is updated in real time – aligning the actual yard with the digital inventory, continuously and automatically.

USER APPLICATIONS

Visy RMG OCR

Visy RMG OCR images and identifies containers. Fixed cameras mounted on the crane legs or beams capture high-quality images of container sides during each lift, and Visy’s in-house OCR software recognizes container IDs, ISO codes, door direction and other attributes with recognition rates of 98–100%.

User applications

Visy Crane Gate

Visy Crane Gate is the desktop management application at the center of Visy’s crane OCR systems. It gives operators and supervisors direct, real-time visibility into all container handling events captured by Visy OCR systems – including recognized container IDs, ISO codes, dangerous goods labels, seal presence, door direction, and images from all container sides.

Frequently asked questions about container handling with OCR

Does Visy offer OCR for cranes and container handling equipment?
Yes, Visy’s container handling OCR systems cover the full range of equipment: STS and mobile harbor cranes on the quay, RTG and RMG cranes in the yard, and reach stackers and top loaders. Each system is built on the same core principle – automatically capture the container ID at the point of lift, validate it, and share it with the systems that depend on it.
What’s common across all of Visy’s container handling OCR systems?
Every system automatically captures the container ID the moment a container is lifted, validates the read, and shares it in real time with the Position Detection System (PDS) and Terminal Operating System (TOS). That combination is designed to give terminals a live, accurate picture of where every container is and what moves have been made.
How are container handling events and OCR results monitored and managed?
Visy Crane Gate is the exception handling application where operators and supervisors follow container handling events as they happen: recognized container IDs, ISO codes, and other attributes appear alongside the captured images in real time. It also supports reviewing images event by event for condition inspection, liability documentation, or exception resolution.
What happens when the OCR system flags an exception?
Exceptions – an unrecognized ID, a dangerous goods label, a seal discrepancy, or a TOS mismatch – are presented in Crane Gate for immediate review. Operators can correct, confirm, or escalate the event directly in the application, so data keeps flowing to the TOS accurately rather than getting stuck.
What recognition accuracy can we except?
Recognition performance depends on several factors, including system setup, equipment type, time of day, and weather. In good conditions, Visy’s systems achieve up to 100% accuracy. In more difficult conditions, such as during a snowstorm at night, the rate may drop by a few percentage points. Across most conditions, Visy systems have been measured to operate at over 98% accuracy.
Can these systems integrate with our existing terminal operating system?
Yes, Visy’s OCR systems for container are built for extensive TOS interfacing, supporting integration with a wide range of terminal operating systems so data flows smoothly across the terminal.
Are these systems customized per crane type, or is it a one-size-fits-all setup?
Every deployment is designed around the specific crane type, equipment, and operational requirements of the terminal, whether it’s a new installation or a retrofit. That means the combination of recognition features, hardware, and integrations is configured for the job rather than deployed as a fixed package.
